Frequently Asked Questions
Is the IHLP in-person or virtual?
Currently, the IHLP is a completely virtual program open to students in grades 9-12. All mentor meetings, guest speaker sessions and research project components will take place and be submitted via virtual platforms. Our goal is to be able to help support as many students interested in science, public health, and medicine as possible. Hence, holding our programs in a virtual format allows them to be more accessible to everyone.
How does IHLP promote networking?
The IHLP was created to provide younger students with a meaningful opportunity to connect with mentors (medical students + graduate students) in the fields of public health and medicine. Hence, our small group format (3-5 students per group) coupled with a monthly mentoring session for 5 months (one session each month) will allow admitted students to truly connect with a variety of esteemed professionals and fellow peers. The structure of each monthly session is specifically tailored to create an open environment where students can easily ask questions, seek career advice, and develop a solid professional connection.
Do research projects need to be completed individually, or can they be done in groups?
The IHLP strongly supports scientific collaboration! Once accepted into the conference, students will have the ability to connect via Discord and can decide to submit a project proposal in groups of 2. However, individual research projects are also highly encouraged and are often easier for students to complete because if you decide to work in a group all of the participants must be initially accepted into the program.
Are there specific GPA or extracurricular requirements for admission to IHLC?
The IHLP recognizes that students come from many walks of life and therefore does not set strict minimum GPA requirements or mandate specific extracurricular activities. However, as the IHLP aims to be a high quality and caliber program, we look for applicants who show enthusiasm, passion, and a strong work ethic within the fields of science, public health, or medicine.
Do participants receive any certifications or awards for their engagement in the program?
Yes! All admitted students will receive a certificate of achievement once they’ve taken part in the conference. All submitted projects will be featured on the Innovate & Educate Showcase Platform. Innovate & Educate Showcase winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) in each respective category will also receive a monetary award, which will be determined by January 2025.
